Forging Romantic China is a monograph of some 125,000 words. The work is based on substantial archival investigations of over five years of extensive primary and secondary materials in a range of research libraries in the UK and US, including the British Library, the library of SOAS, the National Library of Scotland, and the Huntington Library. The study was enabled by a major Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2010-12) and a series of research awards from the British Academy, The Carnegie Trust, and the Huntington Library.
