This 100,000 word monograph is based upon four years of archival research carried out at libraries in both the UK and France (the BFI, British Library, Bibliothèque du Film, Bibliothèque Nationale, CNC). The resources drawn upon were extensive, including trade papers and other press, distribution and exhibition documents and correspondence between film personnel. In many cases this material was unindexed and as such difficult to locate. Mazdon devised the structure and central thesis of the book and wrote the Introduction, Conclusion and chapters 1, 2 and 3.
