English as a Lingua Franca in the international university: the politics of academic English language policy
The bulk of the monograph consists of three independent, but related, qualitative empirical studies/chapters. The first is a discourse analysis of university English language policy as presented on the websites of 60 universities around the world. The second presents the findings of an open-ended questionnaire administered to 166 members of university staff in different parts of the world, focusing on their perspectives on their institutions’ English language requirements. The third is an unstructured interview study with 34 international students across disciplines in a single UK university. Overall, the findings indicate a need for systemic change in HE English language policy.
