A New Approach to Multi-Phase Formulation for the Solidification of Alloys
<27>Understanding the solidification of metallic alloys into different crystalline structures is of fundamental importance, inter alia to allow properties of the resulting solids to be understood and predicted. Phase-field models are becoming widely used for such applications despite the flaws that we (and others) have identified. We propose a fundamentally new approach to the construction of such models. The resulting framework is demonstrated to overcome each of the known short-comings of existing multi-phase approaches in an elegant and consistent manner. We expect this to be the basis for all future multi-phase-field computational methods, both in alloy solidification, and other applications.
