Additional information

Added mass contribution to thrust production has not been modelled prior to this work. For the first time, this study assess this added mass contribution revealing substantial increases in thrust that agree with experimental results on water propulsion. The modelling approach has been successfully adopted in the design of intelligent systems and is now incorporated in major commercial software for aircraft control (Thales). The preliminary data for this study also led to a successful European grant with Thales, Imperial and ETHZ (AST5-CT-2006-030958) and appointment of the author as Visiting Professor at Vienna University working on nature inspired design of fins.
