Published through the new IEEE forum (“Special Technical Communities e-letters”) provides a wider reach for technological innovation and excellence. The e-letter preface describes this article as discussing “one of the most important problems” in social networking. The significance of this paper is the importance of phrase length for topic detection. Evaluation against the same ground truth set as Goker Output 1 demonstrates effectiveness at finding the sort of topics that professional journalists are interested in. This research has recently been accepted at a top journalism conference (Future of Journalism) and for publication in a Taylor&Francis journalism journal.
