This paper contributes an original, “empathetic consulting” approach, to enhancing success factors in international development projects. The novel approach aligns both the strategic priorities of organizations and the personal priorities of team members. Rigorous evaluation of the new approach used six ICT installation case study projects in education institutions in Ethiopia. Case study fieldwork, conducted over a two year period, included meticulous data collection, recording and analysis. The significance of the research is to assert that achieving project completion is less important than project sustainability which must be achieved by a long term partnership with consultants.
