Modular microfluidic reactor and inline filtration system for the biocatalytic synthesis of chiral metabolites
This work describe a novel microfluidic combination of upstream and downstream bioprocess steps, yielding the first demonstration of biocatalytic synthesis of a pure pharmaceutical intermediate in a continuous flow setting. For rapid process development, the microreactor provides a quick and easy route towards testing different bioconversions; in particular, the tangential-flow filtration device reversibly seals any membrane type for facile investigation of membrane-based enzyme recovery, and other membrane-based separation steps. Data from the microfluidic reactor was found to scale robustly. Based on this unique research, Nicolas Szita subsequently won an ERA-net grant (£1.4M) to establish further designs and extend their application.
