This publication is the outcome of a multi-institutional collaboration (Dr. van Wachem in the UK, b.van-wachem@imperial.ac.uk ; Prof. Brown in the USA, rcbrown3@iastate.edu) which conducted rigorous comparisons between advanced multi-physics simulations and purposely designed experiments. The substantial financial support required for this project was provided by the EPSRC (EP/G034281/1 and EP/I000801/1) and EU FP7 (ECOFUEL project No. 246772). The paper won the first author an EPSRC Doctoral Prize and nomination for a European Federation of Chemical Engineering Excellence Award. There was further exploitation of the research findings through industrial consultancy for K+K Wissenstransfer e.K., Germany (Joern_Bruchmueller@gmx.de).
