On the quasiperiodic state in a moderate aspect ratio Taylor-Couette flow
The paper describes flow transitions in a Taylor-Couette bioreactor studied with time–resolved particle image velocimetry. Novel post processing based on orthogonal decomposition allowed study of flow instabilities, revealing a different route to turbulence than previously reported. It was demonstrated that Taylor-Couette geometry is important to fundamental studies and practical applications in reaction and separation. It leads to consultancy (Protein Technologies Ltd, UK, paul.goddard@potein-technologies.com), and further collaborative research with industry (Plymouth Marine Laboratories, Plymouth PL1 3DH, UK, mija@pml.ac.uk; EDTE, UK and Protein Technologies Ltd, UK) in the field of algal biofuel production supported by TSB (TP 4783-44 269).
