On the fluid dynamics of shaken bioreactors-flow characterization and transition
This paper reports a novel experimental study on the flow dynamics in an orbitally shaken cylinder and offers improved methodologies for scaling of shaken bio-reactors. The research was funded by the EPSRC Advanced research fellowship (Ducci, EP/E055958/1), with technical support from industrial partners Syngenta (Hall, alan.hall@syngenta.com) and BHR group (Ozcan, GOzcan@bhrgroup.co.uk). The laminar to turbulent flow transition and flow scaling law identified in this work have already been successfully applied to assess the mixing time in shaken bio-reactors (ChERD, DOI: 10.1016/j.cherd.2013.1003.1005). The outcomes of this research have strengthened the collaboration with our industrial partner Kühner AG (T. Anderlei, tanderlei@kuhner.com).
