This paper is published in the leading international journal for chemical engineering research and it was funded by EPSRC (EP/D032539) with technical support from project partners Syngenta (Alan Hall - alan.hall@syngenta.com) and Dantec Dynamics (Graham Hassall- graham.hassall@dantecdynamics.com). The study builds on previous published research (AIChE J. 53 (2); IECR, 57 (11)). The paper demonstrates that different periodic phenomena obtained with different impeller types can be linked to the precession of a vortex around the impeller axis. The results presented in this paper attracted Kühner AG into a new collaboration and the sponsorship of an EngD studentship (EPSRC-IDTC) on bioreactor design/scaling.
