Additional information

In this paper, the authors’ previous ‘simple shock theory’, published in J. Mech. Phys. Solids (2005) V53 pp.2206, is critically re-assessed and a new multiscale approach is proposed to eliminate the shortcomings of a homogenised idealisation. This work was supported by the EPSRC (GR/R26542/01) and carried out in collaboration with Aberdeen University. The results were presented by the first author as invited speaker at the IUTAM Symposium in Austin, Texas (8-13th May 2011) and at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (18-Aug-2011). A multiscale model is being developed by the first author with support from a follow on EPSRC grant (EP/I028811/1).
