Non-linear response of turbulent premixed flames to imposed inlet velocity oscillations of two frequencies
The paper investigates combustion driven oscillations in gas turbine combustors. This work provides fundamental understanding related to the use of external forcing to control combustion oscillations. For the first time, the effectiveness of flame control was presented, based on forcing at frequencies other than the natural frequency of the system. This could potentially lead to development of new combustion instabilities mitigating strategies. This was collaborative research with Profs Epaminondas Mastorakos (em257@cam.ac.uk) and Ann P Dowling (apd1@cam.ac.uk) of University of Cambridge and supported by Rolls Royce Plc (Mark Jefferies, Mark.j.jefferies@rolls-royce.com) and led to follow-on funding from the EPSRC (EP/G063788/1).
