A preliminary version of this paper received a Best Paper award at the Interspeech 2010 conference, in the area of speech communication. It enables data-driven speech synthesis systems to convey prosodic information such as emphasis, contrast and emotion in spoken dialogue systems, which is critical to improving the naturalness of voice-based man-machine communications. It also provides the basis for the synthesis work-stream in the EU Parlance Project (https://sites.google.com/site/parlanceprojectofficial/).
