The paper was a Highly Commended Award Winner, Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2011. This novel multi-disciplinary analysis (business school, engineering design and manufacturing) of the process whereby traditional manufacturing companies transform their business model to sell services has been used to structure a large research activity (GBP5M 2006-2016) incorporating over 20 academics across 6 large projects (Cranfield IMRC on Product Service Systems, Grant EP/C00294, http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/imrc/). The results were used in a variety of interventions with industry 2008-2010, and across aeronautical, space, automotive and industrial automation sectors (e.g. Mark Crawford, ID_in_audit_file@ra.rockwell.com Rockwell Automation).
