A preliminary version of this work won best paper prize at ICAM, Durham, 2007. The notion of incrementing intelligence into manufacturing systems introduced in this paper has influenced Omron and EDF in their industrial control system specification (refs Mr Karl Walker, ID_in_audit_file@eu.omron.com and Dr Nirav Chokshi, ID_in_audit_file@edf-energy.com). A follow up project with Boeing (DisTAL, GBP450k, 2011-2014, NMZM/182) is using the paper's approach to address production resilience via greater self awareness of key manufacturing systems (ref Mr Craig Battles, ID_in_audit_file@boeing.com)
