Additional information

The unique combination of predictive approaches (Cambridge) and change metrics (MIT) described in this paper provided the novel insight into the nature of the system design and change management that led directly to a two year program of research funded by BP. This work analysed the design of eight drilling platforms across the globe and investigated the prevalence and nature of engineering change in their design. This in turn led to the benchmarking of BP's Management of Change (MoC) procedures and their subsequent revision and adoption within the business (Bob Robinson, ID_in_audit_file@uk.bp.com, RG54680, GBP120k).
