Additional information

Demonstrates the extent and nature of the biocompatibility of photosensitive polyimide materials. Formed a key step for a multi-centre, multi-disciplinary EPSRC grant developing nerve-guides with flexible electronics for peripheral nerve regeneration. Such guides could provide active connections after nerve injury allowing electrical signals through the re-generated nerve to be measured, interpreted and connected to responsive prosthetics. The programme was featured in the EPSRC’s “IMPACT!” exhibition and several follow-on papers were published. Others have used the work to support developments in neural [JMicroElecMechSys 18(2009)1234; CollSurfB:Biointerfaces 76(2010)505] and epiretinal [Biomaterials 32(2011)3890; JNeuroengRehab 10(2013)48] implantation of micro-electrodes.
