Additional information

Spin filtering has previously been understood in terms of tunnelling through a spin-split rectangular barrier, but this model could not explain the behaviour observed here for GdN barriers, and an alternative Schottky barrier model was proposed. The electric-field control of spin polarization observed here forms the basis of our work in a new Marie Curie Initial Training Network "SpiniCur" aimed at exploiting spin-current generation and detection. The 1st author was invited to present this work at MIT by Prof. Jagadeesh Moodera.
