It is proposed that this monograph be double-weighted. The project took more than 5 years to complete, and research towards it was supported by several awards. Dr Ferguson won a 3-year Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada award for it in 2007, but had to turn this down because she was moving to Glasgow. The project was then funded by an AHRC Early Career Fellowship, a British Academy Small Research Grant, and a Harry Ransom Visiting Scholar Postdoctoral Fellowship. This project can therefore be said to have occupied the time and intellectual space of at least two normal outputs.
