Femininity in the Frame: Women and 1950s British Popular Cinema
This is the first major cross-genre study of cinematic femininities in British popular film from the post-war period. Research began in 2004. The project involved the analysis of a wide range of archival material including production files, personal papers, scripts, publicity materials, reviews, fan magazines and trade publications, as well as the films themselves. Materials came from four collections across film, radio and print culture (British Film Institute, British Library Colindale, BBC Written Archives, National Library of New Zealand). The methodology was innovative in combining analyses of film culture for women (audiences), by women (critics) and about women (screen representations).
