Double-weighted statement

Outre-mer is one of the earliest and most important Caribbean novels in French, but was unavailable since its first edition (1835) until the publication of this edition. The 37-page introduction situates the novel in terms of themes (race, gender, generic anxiety) which remain crucial in contemporary Antillean writing, and the edition also includes a previously unknown poem devoted to Maynard. The biographical and historical research on Maynard and his circle required extensive archive work in three separate locations: one month each in Paris (BNF and Archives nationales) and Martinique (Archives départementales), and two weeks in the Archives nationales d’Outre-mer, Aix-en-Provence.
