Double-weighted statement

This monograph draws upon very extensive research in both printed and manuscript sources, covering wide-ranging and complex debates about the nature of ‘public opinion’ over a significant period. In an era in which periodicals proliferated, it examines a very large volume of material from daily newspapers to quarterly journals. It combines diachronic attention to key moments of contestation with synchronic tracking of political language on a large scale. Methodologically, its marriage of political and intellectual history requires immersion in very large secondary literatures, yielding new critical insights.
