Alternative designs of high-temperature superconducting synchronous generators
Significance of output:
This paper is the most recent, out of over 40 published, inspired by EPSRC contracts GR/N21253/01 (completed 2005) and EP/D000688/1 (finished 2010) – together worth over £1M – to design, build and test high temperature superconducting synchronous generators (I was principal investigator on both). This paper provided unique insights into the practical aspects of the relevant technologies, thereby paving the way for future designs and providing a roadmap for further research by considering electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical requirements and discussing the main challenges ahead. Subsequently, through new collaboration sponsored by China Scholarship Council, more alternative designs have recently been explored.
