Prior to the publication of this paper it was not clear whether the Sum of Squares approach to nonlinear systems analysis, towards the development of which AP had significant contributions, would work for all systems. This paper was the first to show that any system possessing an exponentially stable equilibrium point will admit a Sum of Squares Lyapunov function, thus showing that the class of systems that can be treated using Sum of Squares is extremely large, demonstrating the expended impact of Sum of Squares in nonlinear systems analysis.
