This paper describes asperity scale modelling aimed at greater understanding of friction phenomena. Whilst recently published, it is already generating some interest and has led to a small-scale collaboration with Dr Carsten Gachot (Saarland University, funded by Rolls-Royce). With Dr Gachot we aim to explain the behaviour of structured surfaces, which offer significant potential in tailoring friction coefficients for particular purposes. There is increasing interest in the fundamentals of friction, and I have been made a founder member of the ASME Research Committee on Mechanics of Jointed Structures.
