George Orwell: English Rebel

John Rodden says Orwell is “more quoted and referenced than any other modern writer”, and Stefan Collini and Peter Mandler have both expressed their misgivings about the current possibility of writing originally about this hugely important but not straightforward figure, now at the height of his fame. My case for double weighting therefore lies first in managing the great and uneven weight of his reputation, and second in finding innovative ways of writing out of four disciplines (History, Literature, Politics, Cultural Studies) about a notoriously elusive subject.
