Additional information

Based on part I, we designed and implemented a series of computer simulations to predict the competitive growth and grain selection in spiral grain selectors. These simulations have been calibrated using data from industrial-scale experiments. Findings have been taken forward by industry for intelligent design of the manufacture of aero-engine components. [Paul Withey, 01332246933, paul.withey@rolls-royce.com]. Our computer simulation video was used as a part of an hour long BBC4 documentary – “How It Works, Metals” on 04/09/2012, used in teaching undergraduates in Leicester, Cambridge, Imperial College, Nottingham, Florida; an invited book chapter by Elsevier Ltd in Comprehensive Materials Processing Technology.
