Computational modelling of large deformations in layered-silicate/PET nanocomposites near the glass transition
Novel modelling techniques for predicting strain-stiffening of layered-silicate nanocomposite are presented. The results revealed the probable origins of the enhanced strain stiffening, experimentally observed, through the evolution of the morphology (particle re-orientation). The work has since been exploited in nanocomposite morphology studies [1] and led to the composite paper prize [2]. The work contributed to the appointment (of Figiel) to a faculty post and award (Irish Research Council for Science,Engineering&Technology £142k) of research funding for nanocomposite surface coatings for impact behaviour of composite laminates.
