This is a major research monograph of 110,000 words, the first treatment of the topic in the English language. Its arguments are supported by a substantial body of primary sources, collected over several years during five research trips to Tokyo and one to the Hoover Institution Archives (Stanford). It was written during Wellcome Foundation funded study leave for Aldous. He wrote the introduction, chapters 1-6 and conclusion, total 100,000 words. His co-author Professor Suzuki wrote chapter 7.
