Additional information

This paper stems from an EPSRC and Airbus UK funded project aimed at reducing aircraft manufacturing costs by extending expensive cutter life. Finite Element Analysis was employed to determine cutter force and demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy in simulation of cutting process. This provides significant advantage over other available methods in that it eliminates the need for experimental calibrations thereby representing significant cost savings. The approach is now being implemented by Airbus UK and has led to further collaborative research funding from EPSRC and Airbus (Dr Weiming Sim, Airbus, WeiMing.Sim@airbus.com).
