Additional information

This research charts the evolution of printed ephemera from its tentative beginnings in the late seventeenth century to the early years of the industrial age of printing in 1830. It describes the development of letterpress ephemera from conventions rooted in the book to varied designs that catered for a wide range of items and a broader readership. With the rise of the industrial revolution, documents serving the needs of authority, such as the proclamation and the form, began to be outnumbered by those relating to the market place. This trend accelerated in the early nineteenth century as new and improved printing processes and approaches to design were applied to a wide range of ephemeral printing.
