Additional information

In the context of this issue of the Cambridge Literary Review on the theme of translation, the parallels and discrepancies between the 'picture language' of Isotype and verbal language are examined. A vehicle for this comparison is the little-known book of 1937, Basic by Isotype, a visual/verbal primer of Basic English visualized with Isotype. C.K. Ogden's stripped-down version of English, Basic, shared aims for international communication with Isotype, and both of them have become reference points in the digital realm. The particular Isotype concept of 'transformation' between verbal and pictorial modes is examined as distinct from translation.
