Additional information

This book chapter, based on extensive research in the Oxford University Press archives, looks at the working and social lives of employees at the press from the 1780s to the 1890s and how they changed during this period of great technological and societal upheaval. It also discusses the impact on the workforce of the three men who managed the press during that period – Samuel Collingwood, Thomas Combe, and Horace Hart. It is the first study of a major printing firm of the period that not only discusses ordinary workers in general but also uncovers stories about individual pressmen and compositors.
