Additional information

This paper presents a linearised model of microbial fuel cells (MFC) and demonstrates the ability of a set of low order Laplace process models to represent this nonlinear system. The paper uniquely demonstrated the nonlinear characteristics of the relationship between the external electrical loading on the MFC and the potential generated by the electroactive biofilm. The family of models and the methods used in their determination can be used in the design and optimization of controllers to regulate power and/or voltage generation. The work was conducted under the UKERC SUPERGEN Biological Fuel Cell Consortium project administered by EPSRC.
