This article offers a comparative socio-historical study of the well-known play La tonta del bote (1925) by Pilar Millán Astray, a recreation in the form of a sainete of the tale of Cinderella, and two of its film adaptations. An analysis of the two film adaptations, very much in tune with the reigning mentality of the Franco regime and appearing at two crucial moments for Spanish society, reveals the tensions and contradictions that characterized the period and how the moderately ‘regenerationist’ message of Millán Astray was manipulated, not always successfully, in the defence of the regime’s traditionalist and conservative values.
