Till Rolls (in the 7th International Arte Laguna Prize)
The sculpture ‘Till Rolls’ won the ‘Juried Press Award’ at the ‘7th International Art Laguna Prize’ (2013) at the Venice Arsenal, Italy. It was originally commissioned by the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne for the exhibition ‘Compulsive, Obsessive, Repetitive’ (2011) curated by Sanna Moore. ‘Till Rolls’ appropriates 10,000 readymade, commercial till rolls whose middles are extruded up to a height of 3 meters. The sculpture forms a three dimensional grid 100 till rolls x 100 till rolls covering an area of 5.7 meters square. It was selected by a Jury of 10 internationally eminent critiques and curators including: Adam Budak, Curator of Hirschhorn Museum and Sabine Schaschl, Director and Curator of Kunsthaus Basel, Switzerland - for the ‘Art Laguna Prize’, alongside work from 37 countries. The Jury Press award was bestowed by another Jury of 8 journalists including Daniela Ambrosio | FLASH ART and Rosanna Gangemi | DROME magazine. To install the work in the variety of destinations, a collaboration was formed with my colleague, mechanical engineer and computer programmer, Dr Ertu Unver. We used 3D polygon modelling to visualise the form of the final structure and plot the exact heights of each of the 10,000 individual till rolls. This innovative application of virtual space for practical sculptural development was presented in the conference ‘Technologies of Drawing’ (2011) at the University of Huddersfield. Furthermore a catalogue essay ‘The Submerged Side of the Art Iceberg’ (2011) was commissioned alongside the ‘Compulsive, Obsessive, Repetitive’ exhibition and published by Towner Gallery Publications. This academic essay contributes to further research into the contextualisation of sculptural processes within contemporary art. Subsidiary research offers a unique reflective case study of the development of 3D technologies for contemporary Art production.
