English abstract

The meeting of two disciples with the risen Jesus on the road to ‘Emmaus’ is a familiar story in Luke’s Gospel. This study of the Greek text proposes that the original name of the village is found in an early manuscript, Codex Bezae, where it appears as ‘Oulammaous’. This name represents a play on words with the Hebrew text of the story of Jacob’s ladder in Genesis, and thus serves as an interpretive key linking the two stories of divine revelation and illuminating the gospel story. The Jewish nature of the link suggests that it is the earlier reading.
