<2> Robotics: Robotic autonomy. This paper is the principal archival output of the PhD programme of Wenguo Liu, funded by the EU Asia-Link programme, for whom Winfield was the Director of Studies. The work solves, for the first time, the problem of mathematically modelling and optimising an adaptive swarm of foraging robots. The paper introduces the novel idea of time-limited probabilistic finite-state machine(s) to model the time varying statistical properties of the swarm as it adapts in response to its environment.
