Single machine scheduling with general positional deterioration and rate-modifying maintenance
The modelling contribution of this paper is that it introduces different possible outcomes of a machine maintenance activities thereby leading to a new practically relevant class of scheduling problems with group-dependent effects. The methodological contributions include the consistent use of a special form of linear assignment problem (for job-independent effects) and a modified rectangular linear assignment problem (for job-dependent effects). The paper has laid grounds for the study of more advanced models conducted by the team of authors (EJOR, 2012, 222, 393-407; Omega, 2014, 42, 166-178). This and the follow-up papers comprise the core of Mr Rustogi’s PhD thesis, awarded the Best PhD Prize of the Operational Research Society (November 2013).
