Biotribocorrosion of metal-on-metal hip replacements: How surface degradation can influence metal ion formation
Degradation was; 1% corrosion; 13% wear-enhanced corrosion and 86% wear. Corrosion represented (5-40%) in all tests. Enhanced elastohydrodynamic analysis revealed film thickness minima late in the swing phase, with current peaks and de-passivation later in the cycle at greater film thicknesses. This research underpins international debate on ‘metal ions’ and pseudo-tumours’; major reductions in metal-on-metal hip replacements and product withdrawals by major companies – (Cohen, (2012); BMJ 344; e 1410).
