This is a collection of 12 discrete but linked essays in a form best described as creative non-fiction. They are personal in approach, each a blend of travel, memoir, nature-writing and reportage. Each required direct, and rather different, research. For example, some required field trips accompanying ornithologists or archaeologists. Another is the product of research visits to an NHS pathology lab. Yet another was occasioned by a visit to a cave-system with Palaeolithic paintings. All are concerned with the human relationship with the non-human world.
