The Arden 3 Merchant of Venice replaces the Arden 2 edition that was completed in 1955, before the latest critical and bibliographical methods had emerged. The edition proposes emendations to details that have been handed down by three centuries of Shakespeare editors, and in order to do this new collations have been undertaken of the relevant early texts. The bibliographical annotations record this research in detail. This research also formed the basis for a radical re-appraisal of the critical tradition with regard to the play, and this is gathered in a 159pp Introduction.
