English abstract

This monograph explores how the concept of ‘mediatization’ emerged in 1960s and 1970s Argentine cultural critique. In response to locally produced (anti)happenings, pop aesthetics, media art and mass-mediated culture, arguing that this response resulted from a recontextualising articulation and translation of heteroclite traditions. Within the current context of international, cross-disciplinary debates on mediatization, the book analyses the yet unexplored Argentine contribution to the genealogy of such a concept, demonstrating that the experimental artworks and critical debates under scrutiny anticipated some of the central claims of contemporary post-structuralist thought about the media.
