An integrated approach is outlined that enhances contrast in microscopic imaging of stained samples. The image processing is implemented using embedded vision system technology. The approach is currently being trialled by Microsoft Research in Cambridge (contact details available) for consumer applications and the work has also informed biomedical research at the University of Surrey (doi:10.1088/1748-0221/6/12/C12064).
