Additional information

Multiphase machines are finding applications in high-power applications such as marine propulsion. Unfortunately, a small supply voltage unbalance can lead to levels of current unbalance that would require significant de-rating in a conventional motor. This paper identifies analytical expressions to predict unbalance, and demonstrates that undesirable effects such as pulsating torque and increased losses are less significant with increasing phase number. The analytical techniques developed have been applied by Morsy et al (DOI 10.1109/APEC.2013.6520447). The research has also resulted in collaboration with an oil industry subcontractor (non-disclosure agreement in place).
