This paper presents, for the first time, a unified mathematical framework for modelling interference in unlicensed frequency bands. Published in one of the top-ranked journals in the field, it has inspired recent research on the performance of wireless communication systems in similar interference environments in e.g. MIMO cooperative cellular systems (DOI: 10.1109/TWC.2011.11.101551), amplify and forward relay systems (DOI: 10.1109/PIMRC.2012.6362643), femtocell and heterogeneous cellular networks (DOI: 10.1109/TWC.2012.032712.110197 ), and communications over a Poisson field of interferers (DOI: 10.1109/TCOMM.2013.021913.120424).
