Additional information

There is significant interest in long-range dependent processes since they occur in a wide range of phenomena. The paper proposes a simple modification to maximum likelihood estimators rendering them applicable to real data. Heath was invited to present the work's potential application to biomedical signals at two Rosbnet workshops (http://sysos.eng.ox.ac.uk/control/RoSBNet/index.php/Main_Page). The authors have used the results to characterise data measuring ocular accommodation (in collaboration with City University and NUI Galway, reported in Vivero's thesis https://www.escholar.manchester.ac.uk/uk-ac-man-scw:93643). On the strength of the journal publication Heath was invited to present at the 2012 OPTEC MHE Workshop: http://www.kuleuven.be/optec/mheworkshop2012).
