Film stardom, myth and classicism: The Rise of Hollywood's Gods
This 96,000-word monograph is an interdisciplinary study that involved research in Film Studies, Classical Studies, Cultural History, and Queer Studies. It draws on a bibliography of c.220 books and articles, and involved the assessment of approximately 1800 issues of British and American film magazines including Picturegoer, Picture Show, Picture-Play, and Photoplay. In addition the research involved synthesising letters, scripts, and photographs located in archives in the UK, in Los Angeles, and Turin, Italy, building a total of over 4,000 items. Research for the book was undertaken over nine years, and involved two periods of institutional and AHRC research leave.
